LiPo vs. NiMH: Which Battery Type Is Better for Your RC Collection?

RC cars have become quite popular and owning them has become one of the most widespread hobbies in the world, with people organising championships and tournaments. One of the most important components in these vehicles, be it cats, planes or boats is their battery. Batteries as more than just the source of power, they are the heart of your setup. Why Are RC Batteries Important?

Batteries in RC models do much more than just keep the motor running. They affect everything, from how fast your car goes or how long you can keep your boat out on the water. Lithium polymer options are the newest ones on the market and have quickly become the go-to choice for many RC enthusiasts.  Many experienced hobbyist favour LiPo batteries due to their lightweight and compact size, along with their high energy density. 

They can store a lot of power in a relatively small package. This makes them ideal for vehicles where weight and space are at a premium, like racing cars. Their size makes them very flexible, but unlike other varieties, they’re stacked with minimal protective casing. While this does make them a bit more vulnerable to damage, if not handled properly it also keeps the weight down.

The higher density means that it can pack more power into a smaller space, which is crucial for high-performance models. They can provide a burst of energy that can make your RC vehicle accelerate faster or your drone the lift it needs to climb higher.  

They also have a relatively flat discharge curve, meaning they can maintain consistent power output until they are nearly depleted. This is great for performance and you won’t experience a drop of power until the battery is almost empty, giving you more usable power for longer.

There are some drawbacks, of course. They require more care and attention compared to others. For starters, they need to be charged with a charger specifically designed for LiPo batteries to avoid overcharging, which can cause them to overheat or even catch fire. It’s also important to store them correctly in a cool place, to not damage the battery permanently.

NiMH Batteries  

Nickel Metal Hydride models have been around for a while now and they are often seen as the true option for many RC hobbyists. They are more robust and easier to handle than LiPo options, making them a popular choice for beginners or those who prefer simplicity over raw performance. 

One of the key benefits of these batteries for RC collections is their durability. They can withstand a lot more abuse than LiPo options and don’t require as much careful handling. You don’t have to worry about overcharging or discharging them too much, as they are much more forgiving. This makes them a great choice for those who want something reliable and low-maintenance. 

Moreover, they’re easier to store and don’t require special containers or storage conditions. You can charge them, use them and put them away without too much fuss. Those who are just getting into the RC hobby or don’t want to worry about maintenance are the go-to choice for them. 

They also have their drawbacks and limitations too. They are heavier and bulkier, which can be a setback in applications where weight is critical, like in drones or racing cars. They also have a higher internal resistance, which means they can’t deliver power as quickly as LiPo batteries, which results in less punch and slower performance.

So, with all that information in mind, how do you choose between these two options? The decision really comes down to your specific needs and how you intend to use your RC model. If you’re a competitive racer, LiPo models are likely the best choice as they offer better performance, more power and are generally more lighter. They do, however, require more care and attention.


On the other hand, if you’re just getting started with this hobby and want something simple and reliable, the NiMH batteries are a solid option. They are durable, easy to use and don’t require as much maintenance as LiPo ones. It’s also worth considering the type of RC model you’re using since the weight and power are crucial.

Ultimately the choice between the two options comes down to what you value most in your RC experience. One option offers unmatched performance and power, making them ideal for serious hobbyists and competitive use, while the other option offers durability and user-friendliness. Remember the most important thing is that your battery choice enhances your RC experience and keeps the fun going.
